Atul Khatri is Back in Hong Kong – An Exclusive Interview

Jaspreet | May 10, 2019

Entertainment  Hong Kong  Interviews

One of India’s best, most haha-larious stand-up comedians, Atul Khatri is coming back to Hong Kong with a brand-new show to be held on 8th June 2019 and we can’t be more thrilled! If you don’t know who Atul Khatri is (Yes, we are kind of judging you right now!), here’s a little insight.

Know the Man Before Scrolling To His Interview

At the age of 44, Atul had it all. Well, sort of! He was the CEO of a successful IT company, a loving husband and a devoted father. But somehow, that wasn’t enough. Call it a ‘mid-life crisis’ or a ‘longing to do more, explore more’, Atul delved into the world of stand-up comedy after trying his hand at being a bartender and then a DJ (Btw, how cool is that?)

In 2014, he participated in ‘CEO’s Got Talent’ and emerged as a winner. That’s when his journey as a comedian really began. And in the last 4-5 years, he has managed to appear in more than 400 shows, organized in various parts of the world including Melbourne, Belgium, San Francisco, Dubai, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore and of course, Hong Kong. In 2017 alone, he had 3 ‘sold out’ shows in HK and quite recently Netflix released his stand-up special ‘The Happiest Ending’ as a part of their prestigious ‘Comedians of the World’ series.

And Now, the Interview…

How was your Netflix experience?

Amazing! I am very happy to be a part of this global initiative by Netflix that featured 47 comedians from 13 countries from all across the world. Very grateful for it and it was the best New Year gift I received. I started thinking of comedy on 1st Jan 2012 and exactly on 1st Jan 2019, my Netflix special was out. So, 7 years lucky J!

How do you manage to appeal to people across all age groups?

My audience’s age spectrum is between 14 and 60 years. Most of the kids hear my set from their parent’s perspective, and most of the older audience hear my set from their own perspective, so it works well.

What is your opinion of HK as a whole?

HK is one of the most vibrant and great cities of the world. The energy on the streets, the nightlife, the street food, the shopping is unparalleled. I love HK!

Are you excited to be back?

Not excited! Super excited! Last time around HK gave me 3 sold out shows. This time around I am coming with an hour of new jokes, and the tickets are also selling fast! So, should be a lot of fun!

Yes, we couldn’t agree more! It will be a lot of fun, for sure.

This coy and shy looking girl from Delhi can actually binge watch 5 films in a row and talk endlessly about people like Tarantino, Woody Allen, Nolan, Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro. When she's not watching films or writing something cool and interesting, you'll find her doing makeup, shouting on the stylist, preparing her lines somewhere, in some studio of Mumbai (hint - she acts sometimes). Find out what she's up to now on Instagram. Other articles by this author
