The Banana Leaf Apolo (Race Course Branch)

I went to Banana Leaf Apolo for afternoon chai. I ordered a masala tea and vegetarian samosa. My friend absolutely loved the samosa saying that it was the best he has had. The masala tea was great! They serve it in a big white mug which makes it seem like I am having it at home. A nice homely touch.

Muthiah Restaurant at Changi Business Park

Muthiah Restaurant tops my list of best Indian restaurants in the Eastern part of Singapore. The fish head curry is fresh and tastes very smooth. Its spice level is just right for my local friends.Be sure to try their roti prata. It's one of their chef's special dishes. He makes it crisp yet fluffy.

Murugan Idli Shop (Syed Alwi)

Murugan Idli Shop is a venerated institution in Chennai. Famed for its idlis (what else?) and their dosais, I was excited to visit their outlet here in Singapore. I had their ghee masala dosai which was served with 4 chutneys. That was a pleasant surprise as most South Indian restaurants serve dosai with 2 types of chutneys. My meal was topped off with their milky filter coffee. Great food for an affordable price, I'm definitely coming back!

Ananda Bhavan Restaurant (Tekka Centre)

I had my first ever meal at this Ananda Bhavan outlet. This outlet is tucked away in a corner of Tekka Centre and I was under the assumption that it would be less crowded. I was completely wrong. Lunch hour saw a bustling stream of diners! I had never seen "Mint Masala Thosai" on the menus of any other Indian vegetarian restaurant. Being one who likes to order something different all the time, I went for the mint version of masala thosai. I expected there to be some mint (pudina) leaves within the masala. That was not the case. There is a fine layer of mint leaves that is spread across the entire inner layer of the thosai. Its spread like jam on a piece of bread. The mint leaves added a minty zest to the thosai. It was divine. I loved it so much that I'll only be having "Mint Masala Thosai" from now on. =)

Annalakshmi Restaurant

Annalakshmi is a great place for a cultural dining experience. You are attended to by volunteers who serve you with patience and a smile. They are always on hand to explain Indian dishes I really enjoyed the kadai paneer and aloo parathas. You have to try their wide selection of Indian beverages like the mango mangola. All in all, I would recommend Annalakshmi as a place to bring your non-Indian friends and overseas guests!

Hei Cuisine

Hei Cuisine is great for a quiet meal with attentive service. I visited Hei Cuisine recently and ordered their Sardine Curry with Roti Jala. Sardine curry is a menu item that I have not seen at any Indian restaurant and had to try it! The sardine's tomato sauce and the Indian spices were a delightful combination. We had a cup of chai (Indian milk tea) after the meal. Probably, the best Chai in all of Little India!

Chutney Mary (East Coast)

I visited Chutney Mary on a quiet evening for dinner. The exterior and the branding make it seem like a fast food place. I was mistaken. It is the usual Indian restaurant. The interior was gaudy and poorly lit.I ordered the Dinner Set for $14.90. This comes with a chaat of the day, set meal and a dessert. The papri chaat was the highlight of the meal. The mutton set meal was generous in portions. I was stuffed at the end of the meal. However, the food is very ordinary and not worth the price in my opinion.

Mumbai Magic

I visited Mumbai Magic to try their affordable thali meals. For the variety of dishes that they offer, $7 for the meal is a great price. I ordered the Maharashtrian Thali. The food tasted like a home-cooked meal. I enjoyed the food. I was compelled to give it a 5 star rating. However, I had to take away 1 star due to the masala tea not being up to the mark. There were no hints of masala/cloves/cardamom in the masala tea.

Windowsill Pies

I visited Windowsill Pies recently. I like their dedication to pies - you can't find any cakes at the cafe. I got a lovely introduction to the different pies available. They all look so yummy that you want them all! We ordered the grasshopper and the funny apple. If you like a minty flavour, I highly recommend the grasshopper pie. Overall, it is a great cafe with nice ambience. Oh, they have power outlets too!

Al-Mezbaan The Host

I got introduced to Al Mezbaan - the latest addition to the restaurant row on Syed Alwi Road via freefamousfood.com. I had their house specialty of Murg ke Parchey - a chicken dish. The chicken was succulent with generous portions. The Baigan ka barta which is a vegetarian dish made with brinjal was tasty. I recommend giving this new restaurant a try!

Komala's Restaurants Fusion Fine Dining

The Masala Thosai edges are not as crisp as other thosais that I have had. Also, they are not generous with the masala (cauliflower and potatoes). Where they score is in terms of ambience and cleanliness. The accompanying masala chai is milky and has the right level of sweetness.

Saravanaa Bhavan (AXA Tower Branch)

I had the Onion Rava Masala Dosai. The place is not generous with their masala. I like the accompanying curry. The masala tea was nice and milky with the right level of sweetness. If you're looking for a pure vegetarian place for lunch, Saravanaa Bhavan is the place to go.

The Bazaar

I was at the restaurant on a Sunday evening. We ordered the usual suspects (palak paneer and butter chicken). The service was attentive. In terms of ambience, I found the lighting too dim. The adventurous items in our order were the masala fries and the cheese naan. The cheese naan was truly amazing! I have tasted no other cheese naan like the one at The Bazaar. The masala fries were a massive led down though. Don't order masala fries at The Bazaar and you'll have a 4 star experience.

Zaffron Kitchen

My friend was craving for quality North Indian food and I suggested Zaffron Kitchen at East Coast. We ordered tandoori chicken, button chicken, rogan josh and lots of naan. The food was just amazing. I took one point off for the ordering system. Each table only gets 1 ipad with a menu. This makes it difficult when you have 4 people on the table who want to get in on ordering the food. Its great that they are employing tech but sometimes tech takes away from the romance of eating at a restaurant.

French Corner Sweet Shop

French Corner is a welcome addition to Race Course Rd. They have a great selection of Indian sweets (both North and South Indian sweets). The sweets are freshly made at the location and hence have a better taste to them.

Ananda Bhavan (Selegie Rd)

It was a rainy Saturday and I decided to have a piping hot masala chai. I got tempted by the vadai and chose to pair it with my chai. The chai was a tad too sweet but the real let down was the cold vadai. They should have the basic sense to heat up the vadai before serving to a customer.

Taste of India Restaurant

I chose to drop by Taste of India at their new location to have their set lunch. From the picture, you can see that the set lunch is very very generous. I enjoyed the food as it had generous portions of all the side dishes. The aircon wasn't working properly on the day hence I took away one star. Other than that, the place has good food at affordable prices.

Dosa Plaza

I had gone by this new addition to Tanjong Katong Road a number of times. Its colorful interior and unique offerings compelled me to try their food. Their menu is staggering. With so many options, I was spoilt for choice. I went with the American Paneer Delight Dosa. This is a fusion dosa that I have never encountered anywhere. The portion was big. Unfortunately, the dosa's "American" sauces clashed with the traditional sauces that are served with a dosa. I did'nt try anything else on the menu. The place is clean and service can get slow during peak hours. However, everyone serves with a smile. A good experience and next time I'll go for the usual option.

Zaffron Kitchen

Almost a year later and I'm back at Zaffron Kitchen. This time with yet another Swedish friend. I had the Mutton Set Lunch. The set lunch comes with curry, mutton, biryani rice, plain naan, raita and a choice of lime juice, teh tarik or kopi. I liked the generous portions of mutton which were flavorful and cooked just right. Definitely be coming here again.Side note: Their iPad ordering system is still buggy. The waiter had to bring us two different iPads before finding one that responded to touch.
