The late Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh pioneered modern Ghazal singing. Popularly known as “The Ghazal King” his music became popular in the 1970s and 80s through films like Arth, Saath Saath, Mirza Ghalib, Kahkashan and others. He is considered to be the most popular ghazal singer and composer of all time, in terms of commercial success. With a career spanning over five decades and a repertoire comprising 80 albums the range and breadth of his work has been regarded as genre-defining.
Now, one of his most devoted apprentices, someone, who happens to be an immensely celebrated name of the music industry himself – Shekhar Ravjiani has taken it upon him, the difficult task of paying homage to his master’s unparalleled work with the tribute concert – Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi.
The other half of the music industry’s most iconic duo Vishal-Shekhar, Shekhar Ravjiani is the ‘golden boy’ of Mumbai who has been a prominent name in Bollywood’s music fraternity since the last 20 years or so. After joining hands with Vishal Dadlani in 1999, the duo has produced some of the most loved compositions for popular Hindi films like Jhankaar Beats, Bluffmaster, Om Shanti Om, Student of the Year, Befikre, Chennai Express, and Sultan. They are considered to be among the best music composers we have in the country, owing to their originality and uncompromised innovative ingenuity.
And besides being a singer, songwriter and composer, Shekhar also manages his time being a judge on popular TV reality shows like Indian Idol, Sa Re Ga Ma, Voice Kids and Dil Hai Hindustani. Shri Jagjit Singh was Shekhar’s mentor and this concert is a tribute to his Guru.
Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi was conceptualized by Shekhar as a tribute to his mentor. The journey of this concert began with its premier show at the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore which received a standing ovation from the appreciative audience. They experienced the legendary Ghazals like ‘Hothon se Chhulo Tum’, ‘Tumko Dekha’, ‘Tum Itna Jo’ and ‘Jhuki Jhuki si Nazar’ beautifully recreated by Shekhar and his team.
And talking about the team, what further adds to the beauty and the magic of this tribute concert is the fact that most of the musicians accompanying Shekhar are Jagjit Singh’s original team of performers, who have been by his side for a majority of his time as an artist and a stage performer. After the promising start in Singapore, Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi has travelled to Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Jaipur as a part of the Jaipur Literature Festival earlier this year in January. And now this majestic musical evening is all set to dazzle Hong Kong with its 5th edition to be held on 23rd September 2018.
The highly gifted instrumentalist and composer Deepak Pandit has been part the tribute concert since the very beginning. His association with Jagjit Singh spans over two decades and over 70 albums. These days, his work in albums like Different Strings and Dastan-e-Khusro have made him an unbeatable connoisseur of the Indian Indie music scenes.
The theme of this event is white and gold and the audience is also encouraged to dress according to the theme. Let the white stand out for the purity of Jagjit Saab’s voice and let the gold be the mark of his timeless, evergreen talent.
