Treats to Beat the Heat

With the stuffy and humid summer at its peak, it is very easy to fall victim to the heat. Besides staying in cool areas and constantly rehydrating, icy treats are also great in combating the high temperatures. Below are some simple recipes for frozen treats that will invigorate your taste buds and help beat the heat.

1. Lemon and Mint Granita – Light, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day


What you will need: A lemon, 1 cup of mint leaves, 1 cup of sugar, 3 cups of water, a saucepan, a tray and a fork.

How to make:

  1. Mix the water and sugar together in a saucepan and heat until the sugar is dissolved completely; remove the mixture from the heat.
  2. Tear up the mint leaves and add them into the mixture.
  3. Leave the mixture to rest until it cools to room temperature.
  4. Remove the mint leaves and combine juice from the lemon with the mixture.
  5. Pour the mixture into a tray and freeze until solid. Using a fork, scrape the frozen mixture until it becomes little ice crystals and enjoy.

Notes: Feel free to use different fruits eg. lime, watermelon, apple, etc.

2. Banana Popsicles – Sweet treats that will revive you in the sweltering heat


What you will need: 2 ripe bananas, 180g dark chocolate, chopped nuts, water, a tray, baking paper, popsicle sticks, a bowl and a saucepan.

How to make:

  1. Cover the tray with a piece of baking paper.
  2. Add water until a little over half of the saucepan and bring to a simmer.
  3. Cut the bananas in half lengthwise and half the pieces again, so that there are 8 banana quarters.
  4. Insert a popsicle into each banana quarter and place on baking sheet. Freeze for 15 minutes.
  5. While the bananas are in the freezer, melt the chocolate in a bowl over the simmering saucepan.
  6. Dip each frozen banana piece into the chocolate such that they are fully coated. Place each piece back onto the baking sheet carefully, and sprinkle with chopped nuts of your choice before the coating hardens.
  7. Freeze the banana pops for 15 minutes again and enjoy.

Notes: Feel free to switch up the toppings eg. sprinkles, dried fruits, freeze-dried powders, more chocolate, etc.

3. Watermelon Slushies – Rehydrate yourself with this perfectly simple and fruity creation!


What you will need: 2 cups of watermelon chopped into cubes, half a lemon, honey, 1 cup of ice, a blender (please make sure that it is suitable for blending ice)

How to make:
Blend the watermelon, lemon juice, and ice together in the blender until all the ice is crushed.
Add honey gradually by teaspoon until the desired level of sweetness and enjoy.

Notes: Lemonade or coconut water etc. may be added to give more flavour to your slushie.

4. Frozen Fudge – Tasty bites that will leave you with sticky fingers and happiness


What you will need: 1 1/2 cup of Greek yoghurt, milk, 3 tbsp cocoa powder, chocolate buttons, honey, salt, an icetray, a bowl, a whisk

How to make:

  1. In a bowl, add in the yoghurt and cocoa powder. Whisk until the mixture is completely combined. According to the consistency of the mixture, add in milk gradually by tablespoon until the mixture resembles pouring cream.
  2. Add honey to the mixture until the desired level of sweetness, and add in a pinch of salt.
  3. Pour the mixture into an icetray and place a chocolate button on each section.
  4. Carefully push the chocolate button down into the mixture and freeze for 15 minutes to enjoy.

Notes: Feel free to use flavoured yoghurt instead of plain Greek yoghurt, and any milk of your choice eg. almond milk, chocolate milk etc.

5. Nutella Milkshake – The classic treat to satisfy all the cravings on a hot day


What you will need: 2 1/2 cups of chocolate ice cream, 1/2 cup of nutella, 1/4 chocolate milk, whipped cream, chocolate chips, a blender

How to make:

  1. Blend half the amount of ice cream with the nutella and chocolate milk until smooth.
  2. Once the mixture is smooth and free from lumps, add in the remaining ice cream and blend again.
  3. Pour the milkshake into glasses of your choice. Top with whipped cream and chocolate chips and enjoy.

Notes: To give your milkshake a kick, feel free to add in a splash of liquor that you like.
